I wanted to thank my Flour Bluff Hornets math/science team for the great job they did this year.  Without a doubt you are one of the hardest working group of students in the state and it shows with your amazing results at the state championship.  We all know how hard I push you and my expectations for you are through the ceiling.  Thanks for coming to all the practices and working so hard for so long to do what you do each and every year.

This supply list is ONLY for students on the Junior High Academic Team .

Math team supplies are as follows:  Please keep in mind that this list is subject to change.

1)

An HP 35S calculator, or if you already have an HP 33S, you can use that.  The best price I have found on the HP 35S calculator is Amazon  for $46.00.  I know of no place you can buy them locally.

THE FOLLOWING ARE ONLY FOR THE MATH TEAM

3)  1 or 2 small kitchen timers (needs to be digital)

4)  A package of quality blue pens.  Ask your child what kind of pen works best.

5)  Some kind of snacks and/or beverages.  (Never underestimate the power of a food reward).  We use these during practice when the kids are hungry or as prizes for competitions.  Chips, cakes, cookies, etc. are all good choices.

6)    OPTIONAL:  TI Nspire CX or TI Nspire calculator.  You do not need to buy one of these, but if you want to use them at competitions, you must have your own.  This is an amazing calculator and would be a great investment in your child’s education.   This calculator can be used on all state tests and all standardized tests, such as the SAT and ACT.  This calculator is appropriate for college-level courses as well.  It is a bit pricey but well worth the cost.  The difference between the  CX and regular Nspire is the CX is color.  They both do the same thing.  The lowest price I have found for the CX is $130.00 on Amazon  or $61.00 for Regular Nspire on Amazon.  You can also find a good used one on Ebay.   Please make sure NOT to buy an Nspire CAS.  Those are not allowed on testing.

Parent please note your child can not go on any trips with the team this year without this form turned in.  It must be Notarized by a notary public.  The school will notarize free of charge at the Junior High front office.

As many of you already know this year the district is requiring all students who participate in any extra curricular activities to submit to a random drug test.  The details of which can be found on the district website .

In order for your child to participate in any afterschool activities (math team practice)  they must first do two things.  1)  Fill out the consent to test form and return to me (I gave these out already) and 2) Hear a presentation on the drug testing program ( I will do this in class).  Please get the forms in ASAP so that your child doesn’t miss a day of practice.   Here is a copy of the form if needed.

Who:  All returning Academic Team member,  New Team members, or anyone wanting more information.

Why:  We will discuss why the Academic team is such a valuable resources in the Junior High Year.  Give information about what we do along with the travel schedule, and requirments to be on the team.  I would like all parents to please make the time to attend this meeting.  We will be filling out paper work along with answer any and all quesitons you may have.

Hello Hornets!!!  The first day of school will be here before you know it.  Make sure to study your squares to 35, because on the first day of school, you will get an awesome 1 min 30 sec test over them.  Leave me a post here and let me know you have stopped by.

The Art of Problem Solving is probably the best math related website on the Internet.  If you have never spent time on this site it has some amazing content for competitive mathematics.  My two favorite things on the site are 1) Alcumus which is a self paced, level based math curriculum teaching everything you need for Math Counts and 2) my personal favorite thing on the Internet right now  For The Win (FTW)  which is a game in which student can log on and compete with each other on Math Count like problems.  Here is a link to the site, Alcumus, and For The Win.  If you don’t have an account for Art of Problem Solving I would recommend you get one and start keeping track of what you are doing.

Over the last two years I have been working on making a group of teaching videos that follow along the Number Sense Workbook I published. You can purchase the book here http://mathninja.org/math-team/number-sense-video-lesson-and-workbook/ . I feel this is a great product for a lot of reasons but the integration of video lessons and the booklets really make this self paced.  My hope is you will buy  the workbook and watch the videos that go along with each lessons.  Each lesson is covering a concept on the Texas Math Sense Coaches Association TMSCA Number Sense test.  As you learn these tricks you will be well on your way to a perfect scores (400) on TMSCA Number Sense Test.  It can be done!!!!  ENJOY!!!
