About Me

GillespeyI graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso with a degree in Education and a minor in Mathematics.  I have taught for 17 years, during which time I have taught 7th grade, 8th grade, Algebra 1, and Geometry classes.  I currently teach GT Algebra and Geometry, and an awesome class called Math Academy.  Math Academy is an elective for kids who love math.  Yes, they do exist.

In 2013, I was the Secondary Teacher of the year for the Flour Bluff School District.  I am currently the Department Head at my school,  and I work very hard at trying to help our school grow into the amazing school we have the potential to be.

It is said you can tell a person’s passion by what they want to talk about.  I love mathematics, but even more than that, I love teaching.  There is nothing I like more than talking education with other professionals.  I consider teaching an art, and teachers the artists.

I am the coach of the Flour Bluff Junior High Academic Team.  We have an amazing team at our school. We are the State TMSCA Champions for 26 years in a row in 4A.  I am also the coach of our school’s MathCounts team.  We are currently the Regional MathCounts Champions.

It is my hope that this website will be a place to share ideas and help each other.

By the way, I am not a great writer.  So if you came here looking for great grammar, move along.  This is not the website you are looking for…..

Enjoy….

    Mr G-

Have you heard of this website: wolframalpha.com? When I was at parent orientation for our son Noah at his university in MN, the math department brought it up! Just thought you might be interested in it if you weren’t aware of it already. (Which you probably are since you are THE math coach!!)

    1. I actually have used it on occasion thanks for the information though.

  1. Just send me the information via email to [email protected] and ill get it in.

I am coaching number sense in middle school for the first time. Are your resources directed at high school or would they be valuable for my students as well?

    1. Actually it was made 100% for Middle school TMSCA /UIL my team is Junior High also.

    2. What I did was had each of my mathteam kids purchase their own book. They then watched the videos and did the problems in the book. Only after they finished the book did they start actually doing tests. It has saved me alot of time teaching the basics, and you also quickly find out which kids are serious about learning. If you purchase them in sets of 10 or 20 their are discounts.

I found an error in your book. On page 16 ( multiplying by 101), example 2, you added the first and last numbers wrong. The answer should have been 12,524 , but you put 12521.

    1. Thank you for catching the errors. I appreciate it.

I also found another mistake in your book. On page 17 (Multiplying by 1001), example 3, you added the wrong numbers. You were supposed to add 1234, but you added 1245 instead

Hello Mr.G, I have found another error in your book, on page 18 ( Multiplying 2 numbers both over 100), Example 2, you put 104 is 4 more than 1000, and 102 is 2 more than 1000, while you were supposed to put 1004 and 1002

  2. Your welcome bugs.

I like your resources on number sense very much, I am currently practising for state and I am focused on general math and science, although I have recently been incaptuated in number sense too by your website. I was wondering if you would be able to make a workbook or some videos on math, or science, but that would be very hard, but i would be very glad. Thank you and I hope to meet you on state April twenty second. Thank you for your number sense tips!

    1. Thanks for the feedback David. This summer for the first time I will be hosting a virtual summer camp via the internet. Look on my front page in the coming days for more information.

    Hello Anthony,
In Mathsense online enrollment – it’s mentioned, choosing level is based on number sense test score. We are new users to your web site. Trying to find information. Please refer us how can we test kids level before enrolling for course. Is there any where they can have some practice tests?

Also, number sense 1 & calculator application level 1 summer classes are scheduled on June 5th to June 9th. We are travelling from june 8th – 13th. Is there any classes will be scheduled after June 13th.

Is the times on the schedule are for CST.

Are there any recorded sessions available in case if kids miss any of those sessions?

    1. If your child is not currently already doing number sense for a year I would recommend taking the level 1 class first. I would probably purchase the book that goes along with it. I would definitely start there. All class you enroll I will be videotaping the lesson in entirety so if your child can’t make it then you can stay with the class by watching the videos. If they have any questions your child can feel free to email me or what not and I’ll try and answer their questions.

I am only doing the listed dates this year. I do think being enrolled in the class even if it isn’t live will still be beneficial. You would be getting over 7 hours of learning for $100.00. All times are CST.

      Hope this helps
      Anthony Gillespey

    Hi Anthony,

I have signed up summer session for my son but forgot the password i’ve set for him. I tried to click on “forget password” link twice, but it didn’t work. could you tell me how i could retrieve my password?

I am not sure if you are going to communicate with us through email or we need to check out the notes and assignments in the individual accounts.

    thanks,

    Sharon Xie

    1. I will be sending out a lot of information about the classes in the next couple days. Please feel free to email me at [email protected] . As for the password are you referring to mathninja.org or your PayPal account? I will be sending out the notes and such via email. So that shouldn’t be a problem. Feel free to email me with any questions.

    2. You do t really need that information just the ability to use the video software.

    Mr G,
You may not remember me, but you were one of the best teachers I ever had. I remember your lessons always being entertaining, and your math team drills have helped me to this day in all my classes. I know I left in the middle of the school year, but I still valued our time together. The effect you had on me was profound as I go into calculus next year, I still think back on YOU as he teacher who kickstarted my love of math. Thank you!

    1. Jacob its great to hear from you. I was talking to my team about you the other day. I have a kid on the team right months reminds me of you. I was trying to find the picture where we Photoshop you into the Christmas elf. Please keep in touch and let me know how your doing.

I coach the 4th grade Number Sense UIL team for my school. Would you recommend your workbook for elementary? Do you have any strategies for 2-digit times 2-digit multiplication problems other than what you already have? What if there is a problem such as 15 x 25 in which neither one will split nicely? Also, what about problems such as 25 x 13, 19 x 21, 21 x 25, 22 x 18, 18 x 18, or 14 x 14, etc.)?

For multiplying by 25 you can divide the other number by 4 and then multiply it by 100. Otherwise, you can FOIL. Do that starting with the ones digits and remember to carry.

    Hello,

I sponsor our Math and Science club at our elementary school and wanted to see if I could order workbooks for my students. Do you have any special deals/coupons that I could use? I would need 20 Number Sense Workbooks.

    Thank you!

I have a question. My son has taken the competition test for calculator before and they do not use a HP 35s. In order to take your course in calculator does he need to have an HP 35S or can he have a calculator that the competition normally allows?

    1. For calculator level 1 i only teach hp 35s its by far the best way to go fast.
